A refreshing bubble!
Feeling a bit hot? When the temperature is rising, the cool, underground and iconic wine cellars are a great reason for visiting some our wine estates, especially in the Vouvray wine region. Especially because plenty of surprises will await you…
Cave de Vouvray
Out of the 2200 hectares of vineyards in the wine region, around 400 supply this wine cellar with grapes. The Cave de Vouvray is a key player in the Vouvray region, which is clear to see if you visit the facilities.
The wine cellar itself is a nice size: extending for 3 km, 6 million bottles can enjoy ideal conditions, starting with a temperature of 12°, which is also much appreciated by visitors in summer. For the past few months, they have also been trying to uncover the Secret of St Martin’s Guild during a one-hour Escape Game (groups of 3 to 8 people / reservation required). And after that? It’s time for the tasting!
The Saint-Roch – Blanc Foussy wine cellars
The “Grandes Caves Saint-Roch – Blanc Foussy” is a major winery located in Rochecorbon. It also has miles of underground galleries, with temperatures varying between 10 and 12°C. Very refreshing!
Before being made into a restful spot for barrels and bottles, the caves were mined for tuffeau stone to build the châteaux and houses on the banks of the Loire and also hosted a mushroom farm, silkworm farm and even an underground refuge. Before the tasting, you can take a sensorial test to awaken your senses. Can you recognise the aromas in the dark wine glasses? Vanilla, liquorice, banana, coffee… you will soon see that the exercise is not that easy. The cherry on the cake is that the children can take part, too. One final original feature is that if you reserve with Trottxway, you can visit the wine cellars on an electric kick-scooter!
Other wine cellars to visit in the Vouvray wine region: Bourillon Dorléans, La Châtaigneraie, Alain Robert, Château Gaudrelle, Vigneau-Chevreau, Maison Bredif…

On the other side of Touraine…
Rest assured, if you are planning to stay near Bourgueil or Chinon, there are other wine cellars to see! So, in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, the Jarnoterie winery perfect illustrates the two worlds of Touraine winemaking. The guided tour begins from the reception area and takes you on a small path alongside the immaculate rows of vines. Nothing unusual so far… Except that there is a road dug into the slope, taking you below the vineyards inside a maze of galleries, where the temperature is cooler. Naturally then comes a tasting of the vintages made by Carine and Didier Rezé. A wonderful experience to enjoy every Friday in summer during their original wine tours!
